October 15th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) in a communique issued on Friday said it has welcomed the action taken by South Sudan opposition to ratify the September 12th agreement signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The SPLM-IO led by the former South Sudan’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) led by Changson Lew Chang and other opposition groups all ratified the September 12th agreement.
South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon along with other opposition groups signed the revitalized peace agreement in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa last month.
The agreement was brokered by the regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in an effort to try to end the ongoing five-year old civil war that started in December 2013.
In a communique issued on Friday following its meeting, the Peace and Security (PSC) of the African Union (AU) welcomed the decision by South Sudan opposition groups to endorse the revitalized agreement aimed at ending the war urging those who have not signed the agreement including the South Sudan government to follow the opposition.
“[The AUPSC} welcomes the decisions by the opposition parties to endorse and ratify the full text of the signed Revitalized Agreement without any reservations and encourages those that may not have done so, to also fully support the Agreement,” the African Union Peace and Security Council said in a communique seen by the Nyamilepedia.
The communique further welcomed the appointment by President Salva Kiir of the pre-transitional committee which is tasked to carry preparatory activities ahead of the formation of the transitional government next year.
“The Council furthermore, welcomes th appointment, in September 2018, of the 10 numbers of the National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC) tasked with the oversight and coordination of the implementation of the activities of the pre-transitional period,” the ciommunique added.
The African Union communique further commended President Salva Kiir for changing the name of the South Sudan army and for issuing degree urging the army to refrain from attacking opposition forces across the country.
