October 28, 2021—The leadership of the African Union has suspended the membership of the Republic of Sudan following the military coup on Monday.
In a statement seen by Nyamilepedia, African Union Political Affairs Peace and Security said in a communique that the suspension would be in place until the effective restoration of the Transitional Authority is establish to steer the country towards democratic elections.
“African Union decides to suspend the participation of the Republic of Sudan in all African Union activities until the effective restoration of the civilian-led transitional authority”, the statement reads.
According to the statement, the African Union also welcomed the release of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok but further called for the immediate release of the ministers and civilian officials who are still being held behind bars by the security forces.
Prime Minister Hamdok was released yesterday and escorted to his house in Khartoum by the military.
Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, who is currently in charge, confirmed yesterday that Dr. Hamdok was taken to his home and well guarded by security.
