According to AU Press Statement extended to Nyamilepedia Press, the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, welcomes the signing of a historic document that may put Sudan onto a new trajectory.

“The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, commends the Sudanese Transitional Government led by H.E. Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan, Dr. Abdalla Hamdok, and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North led by Mr. Abdalaziz Adam Alhilu, for signing the Principles outlined in the Joint Agreement, on 3 September 2020 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,”  The Press Statement reads in parts.

The Joint Agreement is expected to lay new foundations that include separating the State of Sudan from Islamic religion and giving equal rights and protections to all parties, religions and cultures.

The AU welcomes the declaration and reiterates that these principles will strengthen the Peace Agreement and therefore they will now be integral part of the Sudan peace process.

“The Chairperson is confident that these Principles will strengthen the Peace Agreement initialed by the Sudanese Parties in Juba, South Sudan on 31 August 2020, as an integral part of the Sudan peace process.” The Statement continued.

The African Union calls on the Sudanese parties to maintain the political will demonstrated and continued to work hard to ensure that the documents are fully observed and implemented.

“The Chairperson further encourages the Sudanese Parties to maintain the political will and determination, so far demonstrated, to ensure effective implementation of these Agreements,” it added.

If implemented, these protocols could change the old Sudan from what it has been – an Islamic State – for the last 64 years and install new institutions that would be more democratic in nature.

The agreement is expected to restore hopes and tranquility in regions like Darfur, Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile that have been embroiled in conflicts for decades.
