The Revitalized Peace Agreement dictates that parties are expected to appoint 35 percent of women at all levels of government.

Roda Sebit, a women activist working with the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization in Yambio observed that the positions given were not adequate.

She further went on to demand that women be represented in the remaining positions as that of the state legislative assembly.

“We the women of Western Equatoria, the positions are not enough,” said the activist. “If you look around Western Equatoria, we have only three women in the ministries and we have two women coming as county commissioners but we wanted to be recognized in the parliament as 35 percent.”

President Salva Kiir appointed four women as ministers, two as County Commissioners and seven as heads of state independent commissions in a decree read on the state television.

The government in the 2018 peace accord is tasked with appointing not fewer than six women to ministerial positions. The SPLM-IO and the SSOA are also required to appoint not less than three women and one woman respectively.

Those appointed into the state governments are representatives of the main SPLM party of the former Interim Transitional Government of National Unity, SPLM-IO and Sudan Opposition Alliance.

Also represented is the National Agenda, a partner to the former Interim Transitional Government of National Unity and other parties as well.
