Abyei Administrative Area.
March 10, 2022—The Abyei Information and Radio Service (AIRS) has announced that it has suspended its operations following the communal conflict that occurred in Rumamer County of the Abyei Administrative Area over the weekend.
Senior officials there said the youth, who are allegedly from Twic County of neighboring Warrap State, attacked the area on Saturday morning.
The two communities have been fighting one another over boundaries since last month.
Speaking to media on Tuesday, Karbino Dut Aguek the Managing Director for Abyei FM 102.3, said his radio station went off-air on Saturday due to rampant communal clashes.
“The radio station halted operations on Saturday due to security reasons because the situation was not good. As you know the fighting was going on within the town and surrounding villages,” Dut told reporters on Tuesday.
Dut assured that until the security situation improves, the radio will remain off-air.
According to top Director Dut , some of the radio equipment and journalists have been relocated to Abyei Town.
The oil-rich, but disputed, region of Abyei has come under attacks from its neighbors in Twic and Misseriya from the north in recent days.
Leaders and the civil population have called for urgent intervention to stop the bloodshed and destruction of property.
Youth from these two conflicting communities have been exchanging hate speeches on social media and other media outlets since the eruption of conflicts.
In response to this inter-communal feud, president Kiir has formed a committee and sworn them in yesterday, March 9, 2022. The committee are expected to intervene to resolve the crises.
