8 killed, 8 injured in Lakes State carnage

Juba, South Sudan,

27 May 2021 – A car accident has killed eight people on spot and left eight others severely wounded between Yirol West and Awerial County when a passenger pick-up collided head-on with a fuel tanker.

The state traffic police investigator Awet Deng confirmed that at least seven people died on the spot, he said the eighth one passed on while at the hospital.

Among the victims one was identified as a national security officer, the other one was a pick-up driver who happened to be his co-driver.

Deng also said that the seven wounded people in the fatal accident included a nine-month-old baby, and are now receiving treatment at the Yirol Hospital.

He revealed that the oil tanker driver escaped instantly after the collision at 11:00 am at the Maatbar area between Yirol West and Awerial Counties but security forces were dispatched to trace his location.

According to him, the passenger pick-up was traveling from Aweil to Juba while the fuel tanker was coming from Juba to Rumbek.

Dr. Akec Nhial, Yirol Hospital Administrator confirmed that the hospital received eight bodies and eight people with injuries in the accident, some of who have sustained severe wounds.

“I can confirm to you that the dead bodies and the injured ones have arrived in Yirol. We shall see how they will respond to treatment because some of them have critical injuries. We still don’t know whether they will all survive,” he stated.
