Mar 20th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government on Wednesday ordered the suspension of a South Sudan mobile company operator according to a copy of the order obtained by the Nyamilepedia.

The order affects the Vivacel, one of the dominant mobile network operators working in South Sudan and has been working since 2008.

“The National Communication Authority would like to inform the public that the operations of Vivacell mobile network operator has been suspended, effective from 20th March, 2018, due to directives of the minister of information, communication technology and postal service” said a letter addressed to the public and signed by the NCA’s Director General Lado Wani Kenyi.

The authorities did not give any reason for the closure but sources familiar with the issue from the ministry of information, communication technology and postal service told Nyamilepedia that the network had ignored, several times, to comply with government warnings to obtain licence from the South Sudan government and continued to use the one obtained from the government in Khartoum before South Sudan secedes.

The letter said the company have one week to comply.

“However, due to the inconvenience the suspension might cause to the customers, NCA has given Vivacell a period of one (1) week to suspend all operations but international traffic is immediately suspended” further read the letter.

The decision will likely affect the citizens especially those in areas where other mobile networks like Zain and MTN are not operational.
