South Sudan’s Armed Opposition Prepares For Trump Inauguration in Washington
Jan 18, 2017(Nyamilepedia) —— South Sudan’s main armed opposition, SPLM/SPLA in Opposition, under the former Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, is closely monitoring Donald Trump’s inauguration and take over of the White House.
Trump’s most expensive inauguration is coming up soon in less than 48 hours and many governments around the world are watching with mixed feelings.
Unlike other countries, South Sudan – a war-torn nation that looks up to the United States to resolve its conflict and introduce reforms, was not invited to Trump’s inauguration.
Under Obama’s administration, US officials including president Obama have admitted failing South Sudan and whether Trump would do better than Obama remains to be seen.
Grabbing the unpredictable opportunity, Dr. Machar has sent a congratulatory letter to Donald Trump late last year for winning US elections. In addition, Machar has just dispatched a high level delegation to Washington.
Yesterday Hon. Angelina Teny, a senior member of the Opposition and a former Minister, fled London to join the SPLM(IO) team in Washington to wait for a response from Trump’s inauguration committee.
This morning Hon. Angelina Teny, former IO Representative to the United States Hon. Reath Muoch Tang and the newly appointed Representative to Washington, Dr. Isaac Gang, attended a briefing by the outgoing US Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, Amb. Donald Booth, at U.S. Peace Institute, in Washington D.C.
The public briefing, which exposed Salva Kiir’s government to the incoming administration, was also attended by South Sudan Representative to Washington, Amb. Garang Diing Akuong and his delegation. None of the two sides was given a chance to speak but Donald Booth narrates how the current conflict could be resolved.
Speaking to Machar’s inner circle, the Opposition is currently in contact with Trump’s organizing committee to welcome their delegation to Trump’s inauguration in Washington but details are yet to be finalized.
Many supporters of SPLM/SPLA in Opposition have gone viral over the last few days on social media claiming that Dr. Riek Machar has been invited to Washington but Salva Kiir was not; however, reports from Pretoria confirmed that Machar has only delegated his representatives to the ceremony.
Our attempts to reach President Salva Kiir’s Press Secretary office and Washington were not returned at the time of this writing but it is less likely that a delegation would be dispatched from Juba within the next 48 hours.
Trump, who is facing many public and political hurdles, has contributed $90 millions to his inauguration ceremony which will cost approximately $200 millions.
Although this ceremony will be one of the most expensive inauguration in American history, it is also expected to be one of the least attended inaugurations in Washington.
