Pagan Amum accuses President Kiir of using divide and rule policies to impose himself on power

March 18, 2021(Nyamilepedia) — Pagan Amum Okiech, the former Secretary-General of South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), has accused president Salva Kiir Mayardit of dividing and fitting the citizens against themselves.

While addressing members of the South Sudan United Front (SSUF) in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi on Tuesday, Amum said that Kiir is applying divisive policies towards South Sudanese instead of uniting them.

“Kiir is applying policies that are dividing our people. We apply policies that unite our people. We must unite. All of us must be united and we must build this country for us all,” said Amum.

The ex-SPLM official, now the leader of Real-SPLM, reiterated his position on why he rejected the opposition coalition’s (SSOMA) decision to suspend SSUF, saying disagreements can be resolved.

The SSUF group led by Gen. Paul Malong Awan was suspended by the opposition alliance in October last year for “breaching the communication channel of SSOMA and the spirit of trust within the alliance.”

Pagan Amum Okiech, the leader of the “Real Sudan People’s Liberation Movement” (Real-SPLM) and member of the alliance’s leadership council, said that the decision to suspend Paul Malong’s group from the alliance was based on an “unfair act.”

“Unfortunately, a certain group within SSOMA hurriedly decided to suspend SSUF from the alliance. The Real SPLM met and objected to the decision because it violates the alliance’s systems,” said Pagan Amum.

“Such a hasty decision could be detrimental to the unity of the opposition and the unity of South Sudan,” he added.

The alliance consists of the Real Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (R-SPLM), National Salvation Front (NAS), South Sudan United Front (SSUF) and the United Democratic Revolutionary Movement/Army (UNDRM/A), National Democratic Movement-PF (NDM-PF), and the South Sudan National Movement for Change (SSNMC).
